A surface is an abrupt change in any chemical or physical property with distance, and therein, all chemistry occurs at the surface.  Surface science provides information pertinent to materials science, catalysis, and film growth.  It requires a clean environment and in-situ control.  Overall it allows us to begin to answer; what is the chemical nature of the sample, how does it interact in nature, and how does this interaction effect physical change?
