I spent three years in the CVD group at U of L, two as an undergraduate and
one as a graduate. There I was introduced to the growth of diamond by CVD
and chose to remain in the field long-term. After finishing my education at
U of L, I started my Ph.D. work at Case Western Reserve University in
Cleveland, OH with Prof. John Angus, the founder of CVD diamond, as my Ph.D.
advisor. While at CWRU, I investigated ways of producing n-type diamond,
specifically by co-doping diamond with boron and sulfur. I spent one
semester doing an internship in the semiconductor research sector at
Motorola, Inc. in Austin, TX.
"I have received a great deal from my time in the CVD diamond lab. I learned
research skills that see me through until today, I developed an interest in
a field that I have been involved with for 8 years, I got to work with some
wonderful scientists, and most importantly, I got a free trip to Waikiki
Beach in Hawaii to present my research"

I obtained my Ph.D. in May 2003 and took off about 9 months--three months
for a planned vacation and six months for an unplanned delay in my husband's
visa status. So, for the better part of a year, we toured Europe and
Mexico.
In March 2004, I began work as a post-doctoral researcher at the Naval
Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C. under the guidance of James Butler.
I am now working on functionalizing diamond surfaces for sensor
applications. In May 2004, my family expanded with the birth of our first
child, Tenoch Johann Magana.
